Mallorca boasts a 0wealth of yoga locations, from an airy studio in Palma’s old town all the way to a mountain retreat. And its yoga teachers come from all over the world. finca in a picturesque setting close to Sineu and Lloret in the island’s interior plus a yoga tent equal one happy woman: Martina Menningen has created her own paradise here amidst the wild olive trees. She has lived on Mallorca for 17 years and runs the Yoga Finca with her team. A pointed tent with a 65-square-metre parquet floor immediately catches the eye on arrival at the premises. “I trained as a dance teacher in Hamburg and New York and went on to become one of Germany’s first aerobics instructors. Then I discovered yoga,” says the 67-year-old from Hamburg, who also worked as a TV journalist for many years. Menningen works alongside two other instructors at the Yoga Finca: they specialise in Ashtanga yoga and Yin yoga, with a hormone yoga offering for women. Why has Mallorca attracted so many yogis in recent years? “Look around you, it’s so beautiful here,” smiles Martina Menningen. “The sun warms the muscles and tendons, which is wonderful. Mallorca is perfect for a yoga trip as it’s so easy and affordable to get here.” Moving from the countryside to the city, 1 0 0 our next stop is the Zunray Yoga Studio in the middle of Palma, close to 9 5the shopping street Passeig del Born. It is run by Francesca Zuniga, 7 5 an American of Spanish extraction, and her Dutch husband Roeland Raymakers. A huge, airy room greets yoga 2 5 fans – beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Courses are held in 5 English, with the offering ranging from classical Hatha yoga via Anusara yoga and yoga for children all the way to antenatal yoga. There are also workshops and advanced teacher training courses for real experts. “Palma is a trendy city with a diverse public, and demand for yoga has risen steadily here over recent years,” says Roeland Raymakers. “Business at our studio is growing all the time, and new studios are opening too. It’s great to see.” Francesca and Roeland, who met on a hiking tour and have two small children, are certainly kept very busy. “But we wouldn’t have it any other way,” says Roeland. The couple plan to open a hotel in the not-too-distant future. David Lurey has also found his yoga home on Mallorca. The American offers yoga workshops around the globe – he is coming to Germany in May and June – but is essentially based on the island, where he resides with his wife Mirjam, another yoga instructor, and enjoys life to the full. If you look at the 41-year-old today, you’d never guess that he once worked as a computer programmer in San Francisco and suffered from terrible stress in his job. Yoga not only helped him recover from burnout, but also completely turned his life around. David Lurey is now one of Mallorca’s most in-demand yoga teachers; the numerous retreats he offers on the island are extremely popular. He specialises in Vinyasa yoga, which is supposed to make body and spirit flow, Green yoga for a deeper connection with nature, and Acro yoga, in which one partner lies on the floor and lifts the other up with his or her feet.
