Elyas M’Barek really likes living and working in Germany, where he has made quite a name for himself. He wants to make the sort of films that he’d like to go and see. the incredibly spectacular scenery.” It’s clear that he enjoyed the shoot immensely. “We wanted to place the same characters in a different setting entirely and tell a completely new story,” says the 33-year-old actor. The strategy appears to have paid off handsomely. A popular first film often leaves its successor with big boots to fill – and all too often disappoints. This is not the case with “Fack ju Göhte 2”, according to M’Barek: “It’ll be just as good as the first one. And there are even more gags throughout.” He found the screenplay captivating from the outset. “It’s a completely new story that is told in incredibly inventive fashion.” The first film was seen by an impressive 7.3 million film-goers. Pupil-teacher stories have been popular ever since the success of “Die Feuerzangenbowle”. “School is a topic that everyone can identify with,” reasons Elyas M’Barek. “Everyone knows what can happen in the classroom – they’ve all had experience of a Chantal or a Danger, or of head teachers like Frau Gerster.” The individual characters in “Fack ju Göhte” are quite disparate, so film-goers are bound to find plenty of aspects they can relate to. For his part, M’Barek is not at all worried that a second – and possibly third – film will result in him being identified too closely with the role of the unconventional teacher Zeki: “I’ve played plenty of other parts too,” he says. These include roles in the classic “Türkisch für Anfänger”, as well as in the 2014 Bavarian Film Awardwinning “Who am I”, which also received six German Film Award nominations: here the actor of Tunisian and Austrian descent played a sophisticated hacker. He has even been cast in major international productions – such as the 2013 film of Noah Gordon’s novel “The Physician”, in which he starred alongside Ben Kingsley and Stellan Skarsgård. M’Barek also has experience of the US movie scene, having played in the fantasy production “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones”. He has no great ambitions to relocate abroad permanently, however: “I might do it if the right offers came along. But that’s not the case at the moment.” There have been a number of inquiries and several “bizarre proposals”, but nothing that has really interested him. “There’s no way I’m going to speak three lines in any old US production. I’m just happy to have so many good offers in Germany. And I really like living here too!” He got into the acting profession more or less by chance, which has perhaps made him more realistic as regards his future in the world of film and TV – especially in Germany, where good and, more importantly, wellpaid roles don’t exactly grow on trees. “I do films that I’d like to go and see myself, and don’t waste much time thinking about anything else. I just want to enjoy my work.” What will he do if the work eventually dries up? “I’ll manage somehow – I’ll be able to look back on a wonderful time in the film world and will just move on to pastures new.” Having said that, it’s extremely unlikely that any new ventures would involve a role in the classroom! • Photos: © 2015 Constantin Film Verleih GmbH/Christoph Assmann/Mathias Bothor/Max von Treu
