Wall art. At the Guggenheim Museum (Dorsoduro 701, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal) everything revolves around “Mural”, the biggest painting by US artist Jackson Pollock (1912-1956). This giant work is now estimated to be worth USD 100 million. Originally created in 1943 using household paints, its restoration proved to be an adventure in its own right. The famous patron of the arts Peggy Guggenheim was buried next to her dogs in the garden of the palace – which is a haven of tranquillity amidst the bustle of the Biennale. Abstraction. Irish painter Sean Scully’s “Land Sea” has once again seen the artist provoke debate about the importance of abstract art in the modern age. Palazzo Falier on the Grand Canal (San Marco 2906) provides the setting for a selection of monumental works created for the “Collateralli” at the 56th Biennale. The key to art. Chiharu Shiota’s installation “The Key in the Hand” can be viewed in the Japanese pavilion at Giardini. It features two boats created out of red yarn and thousands of keys that the artist has had sent to her by people from around the globe. The Japanese artist says that these promote “a new method of communication and a better understanding of the feelings of others.” Human encounters. “The portrait of Sakıp Sabancı” is a multi-image work by Turkish video artist Kutlug Ataman featuring 10,000 portraits of people whose paths crossed that of entrepreneur, museum founder and art patron Sakıp Sabancı (1933-2004). Typical bars (bacaros) include: Do Mori, Sestiere San Polo 429, tel. +39 041 5 22 54 01. Turn left after the Rialto market, then take the 2nd alleyway on the right and you’ll find the bar on the left. Not far from the vaporetto stop Rialto Mercato. Rosa Salva. An institution at e.g. Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo. At Rosa Salva the locals congregate round the bar. The seats are only for tourists! Ai Nomboli. Many locals meet at this San Polo bar to enjoy an espresso, a “spritz” or an “ombra”. They rarely bother to sit down. Delightful “tramezzini” and sandwiches are also served: San Polo 2117c, Calle dei Nomboli, tel. +39 041 5 23 09 95. Ai Pugni. Osteria Ai Pugni is situated close to the vegetable boat at Campo San Barnaba in Dorsoduro. Its name harks back to the times when people fought to secure the best place on the bridge opposite. Both locals and tourists congregate here and are treated with equal courtesy. Venedig Alle Angaben ohne Gewähr, Preise unverbindlich.
