24 Salzburg

Festival feeling: Salzburg provides the atmospheric setting for cultural highlights every year (above). On the programme again this year: the opera “Norma”, starring Cecilia Bartoli and John Osborn (below). The Salzburg Festival offers a unique blend of sophistication, joie de vivre, celebrity and popular appeal that simply cannot be found at the likes of Bayreuth, Glyndebourne and Verona. The small Baroque city on the River Salzach, famous for its links with Mozart and its tasty little dumplings, provides a perfect setting for performances by some of the biggest names in classical music. Since the early 1990s it has increasingly been seen as a platform for more experimental contemporary productions too. The 2015 programme focuses on “concepts of inequality,” as interim artistic planning director Sven- Eric Bechtolf disclosed last November, “showcasing rule and servitude, power and impotence, suppression and rebellion.” Perhaps he was also thinking about the impotence of the artist in the face of the power of figures and budgets in Salzburg’s highly traditional musical world, and about the fact that the scope for rebellion is diminishing all the time ... A total of 188 operas, concerts and dramas have been scheduled during the six weeks of the event – enough to preserve Salzburg’s reputation as the world’s biggest classical festival. Three new opera productions, “Die Eroberung von Mexico”, “Figaro” and “Fidelio”, will feature alongside a number of revivals. Placido Domingo is set to celebrate his own personal Salzburg anniversary with a gala concert on 30 July, having first taken to the stage in the city in a 1975 performance of “Don Carlos”. As far as drama goes, artistic director Bechtolf has decided to stage “Mack the Knife – a Salzburg Threepenny Opera”. The original piece by Brecht has undergone a radical musical reworking by Martin Lowe. And last, but by no means least, Cornelius Obonya and Brigitte Hobmeier will appear 14 times as Everyman and his paramour in a play that is now synonymous with Salzburg. In 1920 the Salzburg Festival was officially inaugurated with a performance of this work by Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and the leading role has retained cult status among the acting fraternity to this day. It has been played by Curd Jürgens, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Maximilian Schell, among others. Of course a festival of such magnitude also provides a great opportunity for celebrity-spotting. Many of the rich and famous among the 200,000 visitors attend the event without fail every year. Although these wealthy individuals may lead a very different life to the rest of us, they make their way to the Grosses Festspielhaus or the Felsenreitschule just like everyone else as evening falls. They may be able to enjoy the best seats in the house, but are just as moved as we are when Cecilia Bartoli sings Norma’s famous words: “Casta diva, che inargenti ...” (“Chaste goddess, who bathes in silver ...”). • airberlin verbindet viele deutsche und europäische Städte mit Salzburg.
