Alcalá de Henares: Miguel de Cervantes was born here. His statue adorns the main square and figures of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza also feature prominently. admired in many former mosques and synagogues. Other must-sees are Toledo’s late Gothic Cathedral and its impressive 16th-century fortress. A long stroll through the alleyways of Toledo is also well worthwhile – it has barely changed at all since its heyday, and it’s easy to see why it is considered Spain’s most beautiful city. It has boasted World Heritage status since 1986. Aranjuez This old town lies in a wooded valley at the confluence of the Tagus and Jaramo rivers. Spain’s kings decamped to their summer residences and vast gardens here when they wanted to escape from the heat of Madrid. The Jardín de la Isla, a French-style park created in a broad bend in the river, is particularly beautiful. It’s easy to imagine members of the royal household strolling along its straight avenues in the shade of lime and plane trees. The park belongs to the Royal Summer Palace that Philip II had built from 1561 onwards: this is considered one of the best of the pleasure residences here on the Tagus. The biggest palace, however, is the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, which is surrounded by extensive gardens. The entire “cultural landscape”, rather than the town, was granted World Heritage status in 2001. Alcalá de Henares Don Quixote cannot be left out of our trip, and nor can his creator, Miguel de Cervantes, who was born in Alcalá – a fact that is almost impossible to overlook, not least because of his life-sized statue on Plaza de Cervantes. Statues of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza have also been erected outside Cervantes’ birthplace, which is one of the major sights in the city. Another is its university, founded in 1499 as one of the first in Spain. Its splendid palace-like edifice stands for the explosion of knowledge that took place in the Renaissance, when the ancient world was rediscovered. This centre of western culture was accorded World Heritage status in 1998, together with the old city of Alcalá. • Ávila Segovia San Lorenzo de El Escorial S P A N I E N Toledo Alcalá de Henares Madrid Aranjuez Photos: istockphoto.com/benkrut/Henryk Sadura/Zoran Mircetic, mauritius images/Alamy, LOOK-foto/age fotostock, huber-images.de/Giocoso Paolo/Gräfenhain/Raccanello Sandra
