20 Alpen The Alps

20 Alpen The Alps airberlin magazin 5 / 2015 A holiday for all the family Kids romp while their parents relax. It’s now over 20 years since the first hotels catering specifically to the needs of families with children opened in the Austrian Alps. Since then, the idea has really caught on, thanks to professional childcare and a guarantee that every child will find a playmate. he four-star “Alpenrose” family hotel in Lermoos ranks among the top 25 hotels in Austria, and is proof positive that parents can enjoy a luxurious wellness holiday even with the kids in tow. While the grown-ups revel in the lavish spa and wellness facilities featuring a sauna, solarium, and relaxation and fitness rooms, the kids are kept busy with a variety of activities, including go-karting, face painting, film watching, or simply splashing about in the knee-deep adventure pool complete with sandy beach, pirate ship and water cannon. Professional childcare is available for 13 hours a day, seven days a week, and even babies are taken care of (from the age of seven days onwards). A 24-strong team is on hand to organise cut-and-paste afternoons, arrange hikes and e-bike tours, or just while away the day with the kids in the indoor sports and play area. The emphasis is firmly on fun, with a guarantee that every child will find a playmate. And while this is going on, parents can recuperate in the spa, play a round of golf, or enjoy a four-course dinner while the kids are entertained in the children’s restaurant. The Alpenrose’s “five-smiley” rating is fully justified. It is the highest category awarded by the European Association of Family Hotels which has fifty members, the majority of which are Austrian hotels. Another fivesmiley family hotel is the Kinderhotel Oberjoch, which has boasted a comparable range of services to its partner hotel in Tyrol since its conversion in 2013. The concept of the family hotel was the brainchild of pioneers Gerhard Stroitz and Siggi Neuschitzer from the Carinthia region of Austria. In the 1980s, they came up with the idea of quality hotels tailored to the specific needs of families with children. In Neuschitzer’s opinion, it’s important that the member hotels maintain their own look and feel: “We’re not talking about a hotel chain here, but a group of independent hotels that champions the notion of the family hotel.” Binding these hotels together are stringent criteria governing service, catering, childcare and available activities, all of which must be observed in order to be styled a “family hotel”. Minimum standards include childcare by trained professionals, a play area separated from the business area of the hotel, a babysitting service and a separate children’s restaurant. The Association then gives the hotels a smiley rating corresponding to the level of service above and beyond the basic standard. The success of family hotels also has something to do with the new generation of parents. It used to be a case of “I’m OK as long as my kids are having fun,” says Photos: Kinderhotel Oberjoch, Kinderhotel Alpenrose, Albin Niederstrasser, Familotel Allgäuer Berghof/Moritz Attenberger, Heidi Hotel, Herbert Raffalt/www.wanderhotels.com

Specialised family hotels in Europe Rather than being just family-friendly, an increasing number of hotels are now offering bespoke services for families with children. The most important criterion is the availability of professional childcare, which is now also offered by other hotel associations such as Wanderhotels e.V. (www.wanderhotels.com). Zürich Friedrichshafen Ofterschwang Oberjoch Michael Albert, CEO of Familotel AG. “But nowadays, the grown-ups want to have fun too.” 60 hotels, mainly in Germany, have signed up to the Familotel model, which likewise has strict terms of membership: rooms, catering, leisure activities and safety standards are all designed specifically with families in mind. Here too, a professional childcare service is provided as a matter of course and is available on at least five days a week. Another pioneer is Hannes Neusch. It is over 20 years since he converted his Ofterschwang farm in the mountainous Allgäu region of Germany into a family hotel, promptly becoming a campaigner for the Familotel cause. As was the case with Neuschitzer and Stroitz, his ideas initially met with a degree of incredulity – until his considerable success proved the doubters wrong. Today, teenagers can even learn scuba diving in his pools. • D E U T S C H L A N D Lermoos Innsbruck Ö S T E R R E I C H München Salzburg airberlin fliegt mehrmals täglich von vielen deutschen und internationalen Flughäfen zu Zielen in den Alpen.
